Ford har gett ut ett par specialutgåvor av Mustangen för att hedra filmen Bullitt som kom 1968. Senast var 2008, är det en ny på gång nu lagom till filmens 50-års jubileum?

New Ford Mustang Bullitt Possibly Caught in the Wild

We desperately want this to be real

Back in 2001, Ford released a special edition Mustang to commemorate the famous 1968 Steve McQueen film Bullitt. The 2001 Mustang Bullitt was styled more subtly than the regular Mustang GT but got improved handling and some extra power. In 2008, Ford brought the Mustang Bullitt back following a similar formula. We’ve also heard rumors for a while that Ford plans to offer a Bullitt version of the current Mustang, but it never materialized. That, however, may be about to change.

A few days ago, in the Facebook group “Chicagoland Petrolheads and Car Spotters,” member Tony Zaleski Jr. posted five photos of a Mustang that sure looks a lot like a Bullitt. It’s green, missing the GT’s rear spoiler, doesn’t have real plates, and best of all, it has a badge on the trunk that sure looks like the previous generation’s badge.

Zaleski says that, while setting up a trade show at one of the local hotels, he caught the car in the middle of a photo shoot. It reportedly had a police escort and was covered with a sheet until it got to the lower-level loading docks. Sure, this could be a one-off or limited edition that a local dealer created, but this level of attempted secrecy makes it much more plausible that Ford itself is responsible.

When we reached out to Ford for more information, the spokesperson told us, “Sorry, not sure when any official information will be released.” We don’t want to read too much into that response, but the wording sure does sound like a backhanded confirmation that the Mustang Bullitt is coming.

As the Detroit Auto Show gets closer, keep an eye out for possible leaks. For all we know, the 2019 Mustang Bullitt could be Ford’s big surprise for this year’s show. After all, 2018 will mark Bullitt’s 50th anniversary.

New Bullitt Ford Mustang likely to debut at Barrett-Jackson auction

We know a new Ford Mustang Bullitt is coming. Now we have a good idea as to when it will arrive.

A reader of the Mustang6G forum has discovered an auction listing for a “special new Ford Mustang” that’s scheduled to go under the hammer on January 19 at Barrett-Jackson’s annual auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

All proceeds from the sale, officially lot no. 3006 of the Barrett-Jackson auction, will go to the Boys Republic charity which runs a school in Chino Hills, California for troubled youth. This is the same school that Steve McQueen attended in the 1940s and would later serve at as chairman in the years 1966 and 1975.

What’s this got to do with a new Bullitt Mustang? McQueen, of course, drove the original Dark Highland Green Mustang in the 1968 “Bullitt” movie. And it also looks like Barrett-Jackson has used the silhouette of the original Bullitt Mustang as a placeholder image for the upcoming auction.

Rumors of a new Bullitt Mustang based on the sixth-generation Mustang flared up in February 2017 when sketches of the car showed up in an official Ford video. Those rumors were eventually confirmed the following December when the actual car was spotted during a photo shoot in Chicago.

With the 50th anniversary of the movie coming up in 2018, the timing certainly seems right for a new Mustang Bullitt. Stay tuned.

Nya Ford Mustang Bullitt – stilren med 475 hk och manuell låda

50 år efter att filmen Bullitt gick upp på biograferna, kommer nu en specialversion av Ford Mustang med namnet ”Bullitt”. Bilen är en hyllning till den Mustang som användes i filmen, och till Steve McQueen – som körde den.

Den nya versionen, som baseras på ansiktslyfta Mustang GT, har en familjär mörkgrön färg och saknar både emblem och annat exteriört krimskrams – precis som den ursprungliga filmbilen.

I Detroit avtäcktes bilen av ingen mindre än Steve McQueens barnbarn Molly. Vid presentationen medverkade även originalbilen, som McQueen rattade 1968. Den återfanns ju tidigare i år, efter att ha varit försvunnen i många år, och renoverades upp till originalskick.

Under den bulliga huven finns naturligtvis V8:an på 5,0 liter från Mustang GT, men i Bullitt har den trimmats till ”minst 475 hästkrafter”. Att Ford inte anger en exakt siffra beror antagligen på att det ännu återstår lite finjusteringar på motorn. Andra uppdateringar gentemot GT:n innefattar bland annat öppet sportluftfilter, grenrör från GT350 och ett aktivt avgassystem med svarta pipor.

På utsidan återknyter kromlister kring grillen och fönstren till originalbilen. Fälgarna är i 19 tum, som är tvåfärgade i silver och svart, gömmer bromsar från Brembo. Förutom den mörkgröna lacken, Dark Highland Green, kan bilen också fås i svart – Shadow Black.

På insidan lägger vi framförallt märke till den manuella växellådan med den klassiska biljardkulan på toppen av växelspaken. Bullitt går inte att få med automatlåda.

Tre fabriksmonterade tillval går att få invändigt. Det ena är ett utrustningspaket innehållande navigation, elektriska stolar, uppgraderat ljudsystem och diverse förarassistanssystem. Det andra är den aktiva fjädringen ”MagneRide”, och det tredje är skalstolar i svart läder och med gröna sömmar från Recaro. På förarplats påminner Bullitt-emblemet i ratten om vilken bil du sitter i.

Bullit, som har potential att vara den ultimata Mustangen, börjar säljas i sommar.

Kultfilmen Bullitt med Steve McQueen i huvudrollen – bredvid en Ford Mustang – firar 50-årsjubileum i år. Det uppmärksammar Ford med en ny Mustang-modell som inte helt otippat döpts till just Bullitt.

V8-motorn på 5,0 liter har modifierats för att ge "minst 475 hp och 420 lbf/ft", vilket omräknat innebär minst 482 hk och 569 Nm. På utsidan hittar vi attribut som speciella femekrade 19-tumsfälgar om möjlighet att välja den speciella mörkgröna kulören "Dark Highland Green".

På insidan hittar vi Recaro-säten, inredning sydd i grön kontrastsöm och givetvis den speciella växelspaksknoppen vi känner igen från filmen Bullitt.

Enligt Ford så ska nya Mustang Bullitt säljas för ett pris som ligger under det som GT350 säljs för och produktionen ska vara begränsad. Definitivt pris och exakt produktionsvolym får vi dock vänta på.

Ford Mustang Bullit är inget nytt påfund. Ford gjorde en Bullitt-Mustang 2001 och även 2008.

Kultfilmen Bullit gick upp på biodukarna 1968. Filmen blev Oscarsbelönad och handlar om detektiven Frank Bullitt, som får i uppdrag att skydda ett vittne som skall framträda i ett senatsförhör. Han misslyckas med sitt uppdrag då vittnet mördas. Förhöret läggs ner men ingen kan stoppa Frank Bullitt i jakten på den skyldige...

Och förutom att vi får se Steve "King of Cool" McQueen i rollen som den coole detektiven Bullit, tillhör biljakterna på San Franciscos gator några av historiens mest spektakulära filmscener.

I rollerna hittar vi – förutom en viss Mustang Fastback – även Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn och Jacqueline Bissett. För regin stod Peter Yates.

Kvinnan som är med i filmerna nedan är Molly McQueen, skådespelare och producent. Steve McQueen var hennes farfar och missa inte filmen nedan när hon återser den ursprungliga Bullitt-Mustangen. Fords nya film från parkeringsgaraget är förstås en kärleksfull glimt till originalfilmen från 1968 och den klassiska biljakten i San Francisco.

Go see the original Bullitt Mustang in D.C.

If you're a fan of Steve McQueen and the 1968 film "Bullitt," you have a soft spot in your heart for a certain Highland Green machine. The 1968 Ford Mustang used during filming was recently found and now it has returned to the spotlight. It's getting an even bigger light cast its way because the original film-used car is on display at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

You'd better get a move on if you want to look for yourself. From now through April 23rd, the original Bullitt Mustang is prominently on display in a glass "garage" in our nation's capital.

“To see the Bullitt under glass within steps of the Smithsonian museums, the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument is a fitting tribute to automobiles that have transcended utility to become truly iconic examples of America’s culture,” said Carl Widmann, Ford Mustang chief engineer.

The car also recently received another honor. It was inducted into the National Historic Vehicle Register, which brings the total vehicle count in this crew up to 24.

Many fans of the film and the car itself long feared that the McQueen-driven Mustang was lost to time, forgotten in a junkyard, crushed and turned into scrap, or simply left rotting in a barn. Mustang hunters could never locate the car. That changed when Sean Kiernan linked up with Ford ahead of the reveal of the 2019 Mustang Bullitt at the 2018 Detroit auto show.

Sean's father, Robert Kiernan, Jr., purchased the car back in 1974. He paid $6,000 for it, and that investment decades prior is worth millions of dollars today. The plan was never to keep the car a secret, but life gets in the way and project cars wind up sitting dormant.

Kiernan contacted Ford two years ago about the possibility of authenticating and restoring the car. Instead the car sits in its original condition, and that may make it more valuable. It has camera mounts welded underneath, a Warner Bros. parking lot sticker, and, per McQueen's request, the backup lights are removed.

Once considered a lost relic, this 1968 Ford Mustang has returned to the limelight.

Er, maybe the Highland Green light? Either way, you shouldn't miss a chance to see it up close in D.C.
