2006 Ford GT with 10.8 miles on the clock heads to auction

Rare cars with low mileage are basically duck calls for moneyed automotive investors. There doesn't seem to be a financial downside when it comes to securing these unicorn machines. One will pop up on an auction listing site and you can practically hear bank accounts across the world tingling in anticipation of the time when the gavel will strike down and ship a special vehicle off to a new home. When it rolls up to auction next year, the vehicle above is sure to illicit such a reaction.

RM Sotheby's has gotten its white-glove covered mitts on a 2006 Ford GT with impossibly low mileage. A one-owner car, this white example split with blue stripes shows just 10.8 miles on its odometer. That means someone paid handsomely for a Ford supercar and then never drove it. In fact, the interior is still covered with the delivery plastic. Think that's strange? Well someone else did the same, only in this instance the car was a McLaren F1.

If you're eager to add the Ford GT to your stable, you'll need to head down to Fort Lauderdale, Florida next spring. That's where the RM Auctions two-day event unfolds over the course of April 6-7.

Pre-auction estimates peg the value somewhere between $300,000 and $350,000. Honestly, with the mileage being this low the new owner would be getting an essentially brand-new 2006 Ford GT. Furthermore, that estimate seems a tad low. First-generation Ford GT values have slipped a bit from their high sometime in 2016, which occurred with the arrival of the newer car. But those values are climbing back to where they used to be. This one here should be at least a $400,000 car.

With no reserve, that pre-auction estimate probably just serves to have buyers licking their chops with the hopes of getting a "deal". Don't be surprised though if a bit of a bidding war breaks out.

This 2005 Ford GT was never titled, and it's now for sale

Ford's (in)famous vetting process for its modern GT supercar is fairly intense, but there's perhaps something even better for sale currently. This 2005 Ford GT is brand new, never titled, and only shows 6 miles on the odometer.
Hawk Ford in Niles, Illinois, has placed the car for sale, which features a red exterior color with white stripes. Motor Authority confirmed with the dealership that the car is still for sale as of Thursday.

So the story goes, Zimmerman Ford purchased the car when the first-generation GT began production. However, the dealer was never able to sell it, thus, it was never titled.
Hawk Automotive Group swooped in (pun intended) and purchased Zimmerman Ford this past September. The never-titled first-generation GT simply came with the deal, and it now seeks a new owner—it's first true owner.

The previous-generation GT came to life as a centennial celebration present for Ford, which drew heavy inspiration from the famed GT40 racer of the 20th century. The production car graced us for just two model years between 2005 and 2006, and featured a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine that makes 550 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission was the only option.
When new, the 2005 GT cost a cool $149,995. Hawk Ford has the car listed for a loftier sum of $449,900. That's one heck of a price premium, but perhaps a small price to pay to be the first owner of a brand-new car that exited production 12 years ago. And with 20 percent down, the payment is just $4,903 per month.

2006 Ford GT with 24 miles seeks it's first owner

Finding a never-titled and low-mileage supercar used to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In less than four months, two first-generation Ford GTs have surfaced for sale that fit that bill.

The most recent example is seen here: a 2006 GT with only 24 miles on the odometer. The listing on duPont Registry also says the car was never titled. The car's backstory is unknown, but photos show the claimed 24 miles on the odometer and no license plates. The first never-titled GT that showed up in November of last year was part of a dealership sale, however, this car appears to belong to an individual, judging by the photos posted with the sale listing. That hardly explains why it was never titled, though.

The car is Royal Blue with white stripes and features the factory BBS wheels, premium audio system, painted brake calipers, and the factory car cover. Once again, it appears this is someone's chance to own a factory fresh Ford GT.

Like all other GTs, the car packs a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine that makes 550 horsepower and a 6-speed manual transmission. In some ways, the original GTs may become even more desirable than the current second-generation car. Its forced-induction V-8 engine has numerous fans and the car was a centennial birthday present to the company.

That thinking brings us to the asking price. The seller asks $450,000 for this GT, which is identical to the price of the 2005 GT that showed up last November. For some comparison, the supercar cost $149,995 when new. We're talking major appreciation if GTs continue to sell at these prices, and we have no doubt someone will scoop the supercar up.

Reviving the spirit (as well as revving the engine) of the Motor City seems slightly less necessary these days than it did during the turn of the 21st century. With a renewed emphasis on performance appearing across all domestic brands today, Detroit’s “Big Three” automakers have been producing some of their best work at the dawn of the 2020s. Additional interest in American-made sports cars only increased after the release of Ford vs. Ferrari, so it can be tough to remember how much of a gamble it was for Ford to greenlight the retro-inspired, first-generation Ford GT in honor of the company’s centenary in 2002.

We’ve covered the story of the Ford GT before on the blog, but the example we have today is even more important to the history of the most iconic American supercar of all time. The Ford GT felt so much a hometown hero that we decided to feature several other significant American cars, all “imported from Detroit,” and all available at RM Sotheby’s upcoming Online Only: Open Roads, Fall auction, which opens for bidding on 11 November:

As with many desirable development vehicles, Ford Motor Co. was known to retain the first nine chassis numbers for internal owners, either employees themselves or those deemed important to the company. This example, “chassis no. 02,” was offered originally to Mr. Michael Dingman, the renowned corporate dealmaker and a long-standing member of Ford’s Board of Directors, who was also well-known in the vintage car world for his meticulously maintained, museum-like collection of American cars paired with period neon signs. A highly desirable “four-option” example showing fewer than 250 miles from new, chassis no. 02 is likely the lowest serial number Ford GT that will ever be available to the public. An undeniable piece of Detroit history.

Lucky Numbers: A Heritage-Edition Ford GT with Exceptionally Low Mileage Could Be Yours

Fresh as when it was delivered new to Freedom Ford, this 2006 Ford GT is ready for anything.
As we discussed last week in our mention of another mid-2000s supercar heading to RM Sotheby’s annual Amelia Island auction, numbers are very important to the mythology of any automotive brand. The impetus behind re-imagining the classic Ford GT40 as a 21st century supercar was a number, after all—a celebration of the Dearborn-based company’s centennial. A note that was even referenced in the right-side headlight assembly, spelling out “100” in honor of the years since Henry Ford’s reputation was established by another performance car, named “Sweepstakes,” which beat the heavy favorite Harry Winton at the Grosse Pointe Race Track in October 1901, with Ford himself at the wheel, forever endowing his family firm with a high-performance heritage.

Naturally, it was with recognition of this long company heritage that the Ford GT was built in the first place, but the Heritage edition specifically referenced the Blue Oval brand’s success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1968 and 1969, when the winning chassis number 1075 wore a blue-and-orange livery sponsored by Gulf Oil (which, in turn, elevated the GT40 to an even-more-legendary race car club).

For the Ford GT’s triumphant return to the world stage, company executives decided to create an even-smaller run of 343 special-edition examples with Heritage Paint Livery like this 2006 example, representing less than 10% of total production. The Epic Orange and Heritage Blue color scheme were finished with a white oval, on which the owner could put the number of their choosing.

On this example, that number is up for the new owner to decide. Originally, the winning Le Mans car wore the number 9, a fact which is reflected in a David Snyder oil painting, commissioned to match this example, also accompanying the sale.

The fact that the fate of this Ford’s numerology has yet to be determined provides a clue about the nature of this particular GT. A second clue to its unadulterated state is instantly revealed upon opening the GT’s signature, sculpted doors: The protective, dealer-issued covering still remains intact across the door sills, steering wheel, and driver’s seat, hinting at the fresh, as-new condition of this example.

It is no secret that values for the Ford GT are largely determined by the optional extras ordered (this is a “three-option” example, for instance) and the all-important total mileage. Living a pampered life since it was delivered new to Freedom Ford in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, this example showed a mere 2.7 miles on its odometer at the time of cataloguing; the original dealer notices are still hanging on the dashboard.

Prospective owners of Ford’s now-classic supercar want to experience what it felt like to collect the GT as-new. With ten cylinders of power, a manual transmission, and an aesthetic that hits the high notes of Ford’s mid-century racing heritage, the reborn Ford GT is an expression of automotive art that likely will not be equaled in the future, even by Ford themselves. This extremely low-mileage example, then, is as close as one could come to collecting the all-American icon from new; and it will be up to the new owner whether to drive it or keep it pristine for the next generation. Either way, a proud heritage.
